Data sovereignty

An important aspect of tribal sovereignty is the control of intellectual property and data from environmental programs. We will discuss data sovereignty, providing examples of important information to include in data stewardship agreements with contractors, agencies, and other institutions and individuals involved in the collection, analysis and archiving of tribal environmental data. Forms to Sheets to My Maps

9:45 - 10:30

Hands-on development of digital forms for soliciting community input that can be easily added to spreadsheets and maps used for Brownfields inventories and other geospatial databases (GIS, etc.). Click here for session materials

My Maps

10:30 - 11:15

Hands-on development of map mash-ups using publicly available data in spreadsheet and map file (KML and SHP) formats from federal and state agency websites, adding data layers from our field inventories, existing tribal databases, and community input. We will learn how to edit these maps, add photos and video to placemarks, and embed maps on our websites. Click here for session materials

Mobile Data Collection 

11:15 -11:45

Hands-on learning of techniques for using mobile devices for fieldwork and inputting the data from the field into online databases and digital maps without the need for transcription. Click here for session materials

Wrap up and sharing

Group discussion about the session and what the participants accomplished. Sharing of insights, examples, and best practices.
