‘sacred red rock’

Íⁿ’zhúje’waxóbe

On August 30, 2023 the sacred Red Rock was removed from Robinson Park in Lawrence, Kansas and loaded on a truck for the journey to Allegawahoo Memorial Park near Council Grove. The Rematriation of Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe to the Kanza people is an important step in acknowledging the history of the relationship of the city of Lawrence and the state of Kansas with the first peoples who inhabited the region since time immemorial.

After the city of Lawrence completed the construction required to improve the stormwater tunnels under the park, the Sacred Red Rock Project leadership committee began public meetings to reimagine what Robinson Park should become.

In today's class we will provide the leadership team with an overview of potential ecological restoration options. We will research the plants and animals that are native to the riparian zone of the Kansas River in Lawrence, provide insights into the habitats that once occurred in the park and adjacent areas, and suggest options for restoration of this highly impacted site.

Robinson Park Conservation Plan

For today's activity we will develop recommendations to give to the leadership team for the Sacred Red Rock Project as they begin the planning phase for Robinson Park.

You will use the slide deck below to create a conservation plan for Robinson Park and the adjacent area. You will need to sign into a Google Account to edit the slides. This set of slides will then be shared with the Sacred Red Rock leadership team for their use.

The links under Environmental Resources will give you some ideas about small scale habitat projects that may be appropriate for the site.
